President’s Message from Dave Pelletier

Well, here we are in August already.  This summer seems to be flying by!  Looking back, I don’t feel as though I have been riding as much as past summers….which brings us to:

Tuesday Breakfasts are at Snug Harbor Marina in Wakefield.  Covered, shady picnic tables with a great Marina view!

Coming up on Labor Day Weekend is the BMWRA National Rally, this year held in Fryeburg, Maine!  I have signed up for off road training on Friday morning, and hope to visit David Percival’s museum in Andover, Maine.  David has one of the world’s premier BMW collections!

Unfortunately, the ride to the Nettesheim Museum for this Saturday had to be canceled due to the weather forecast.  Thanks to Ken Richmond for trying to get this going!  Hopefully, we can squeeze in a rain date in the future!

Another unfortunate incident: I was recently involved in a motorcycle accident with an SUV.  Fortunately, I (as always) was wearing protective gear, and was unharmed!  This happened while I was in New Hampshire, and was able to ride my bike home!  Now, to deal with the insurance Companies!  I’ll speak more on this at the monthly meeting on the 12th.

Ride Safe!
Rubber side sown!

Secretary’s Message from Steve Forand

To All,
It’s Clam Rally time!!! Ok, its 20-22 September a little over a month away. We are way behind on our registration numbers.

Don’t forget to take a look at our club store! The new line of apparel is fantastic! Joe Tatulli, our resident graphic artist and man about town, has hit it out of the ballpark with this year’s design.
See you on Monday night! Come early for dinner and the camaraderie.

Steve

A Sidecar Saga

So, Joey is looking for a few paragraphs that have something to do with motorcycles or the club. Hold onto your pantyhose because I never know where this is headed.

Let’s take an easy topic for me….sidecars! I have seen a growing interest in sidecars lately, could it have anything to do with an aging population? Probably, as there appears to be an illusion that sidecars are easier to use due to the fact they don’t tip over as easy as a two wheeled vehicle. While that is true to a point, the bottom line is that sidecars are actually harder to operate because of all the different forces involved and the upper body strength needed to overcome some of those forces.

Ray Goppold introduced me to sidecar fun many years ago when he purchased his K75/Velorex rig . I had Beemer Dog at the time and thought it would be great not to leave the dog home while I went out riding. I purchased a Velorex “chair” and soon had it clamped on to a Honda V65 Sabre. What a disaster! Almost died within the first five miles and Beemer was smart enough to say “no thanks”.

Elderly folks like to tell stories about their own or friend’s rigs and trips they may have taken. Grandkids love rides usually because it entails a trip to an ice cream parlor and a ride around the reservoir. Starr is getting on in years and doesn’t like to get picked up so her trips in the rig are pretty much over but when she would ride with her “Doggles” we used to have people follow us in their cars to our destination so they could take pictures and ask questions. If kids were in the car with Mom they would sit in or on the rig for photos also. Last and definitely not least, Joanie who has given up riding pillion, will go in the sidecar  for a ride to eat, visit the grandkids or a spin around Newport or Narragansett.

That’s the end of this rambling as I need to cut the grass and get my RC390 ready for a track day at Thompson on Monday. Bottom line for me is I just enjoy being out in the fresh air with a destination, food, good friends and some type of machinery that is a bit more fun than the F150.
