September 2025 – How Much Is Enough?

By Joe Tatulli

This is another look at the recent trip I took to Canada. The weather outlook at the time (Mid-June) was cooler than normal, and we were going north. That prompted me to take some gear for the cooler climes of the Canadian Maritimes. We would be going significantly north of Quebec City and up into the Gaspé Peninsula where things can get a bit sketchy weather wise in the early summer.

As a rule I am an overpacker. I like to have some options, and I tend to forget that I will be in a different city each night so wearing the same t-shirt to dinner isn’t an issue. I know… I’m a slave to fashion. Not really but you get the idea. So over the past ten or so years I come home and unpack two or three unused T’s, and maybe a couple of pairs of socks.

Okay, so with the weather issue above, and my tendency to overpack!!! A picture is worth a thousand words.

I took everything out of my 38L Dry-Spec bag and my side case liners, and laid it out on the dining room table. As you can see… I overpacked. That’s the bad news. The good news is I was prepared for trip and the probability (at the time) for some bad weather up North. In case you are interested the actual weather in Canada was superb. Sunny and nice every day. Here is a link to the rest of the story from a previous RUMBLE issue.
